Most of you are probably familiar with the style of death metal played by Swedish bands in the early '90s. Chainsaw-sounding guitars, dark atmosphere, tastefully placed melodies here and there; this is basically the essential early stuff that was the standard before the Gothenburg style became popular and initiated the formation of dozens of watered-down At The Gates clone "melodeath" bands. These are the albums every "old school" swedeath retro group copies, by the artists they aspire to be like. If you aren't familiar with any of these releases, admit to youself that you are clueless about the genre.

  4. Pretty good starter list. I love the more european side of death, but its all amazing really. Finland and the Netherlands also sport some great acts. I'd love to see some more posts on this side of the genre, as well as the more evil and occult stuff like, Mitochondrion, Father Befouled, Immolation, Encoffination, Vasaeleth, etc.
